Barton Wellfield

Recognized by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Utah as an outstanding project in 2009 in the Public Works/Environmental category, the Barton Wellfield Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Plant Expansion was a twofold project. Designed by Carollo Engineers and built by Alder Construction, the first phase involved the construction of a new water treatment facility capable of generating 6.0 mgd of treated water for the Magna Water District located at Magna, Utah. The second phase was an expansion to the existing Magna wastewater treatment facility, specifically designed and built to treat the byproduct water produced by the treatment facility.

On the first phase of this project, Alder Construction was contracted to build the 27,000 sf Barton Wellfield Water Treatment Plant to house the water treatment system as well as associated aperients. This two story masonry block and steel structure with a metal truss roof system also provides office space, a training room as well as a laboratory for use by district personnel. A considerable amount of yard piping, ranging in size from 18” to 36” was also installed to connect the new plant into the existing water distribution system.

The second phase of this project, the expansion of the existing wastewater treatment plant, included the construction of a new headworks facility and a BIOBROx facility which is a unique process for handling wastewater generated by the new water treatment plant. This facility houses six bioreactors, each 12 ft in diameter, over 16 feet tall and weigh over 7 tons empty. In addition to the bioreactors, the BIOBROx facility houses various pumps, air blowers and electrical equipment required to make the BIOBROx process work. Alder was very pleased to be involved with the construction of the new BIOBROx facility developed by Carollo Engineers, as it considered the first of its type anywhere in the world.

These improvements have increased the capacity of the Magna wastewater treatment plant by 4 million gallons per day.
